Is there any limit to the depth of a borehole log?
No, a borehole log can start at any depth and finish at any depth. The program will automatically calculate how many pages are required to display the log.
How many lithologic layers can a borehole log have?
Each borehole log can have an unlimited number of layers.
Can metric and imperial units be used for a borehole log?
Either metric or imperial units can be used to enter data in a borehole log, the units to use is set in the template. The units displayed in a depth or elevation column can be different then the units used for data input, the program will automatically convert the units for display.
How many wells or piezometers can be shown on a borehole log?
An unlimited number of wells or piezometers can be drawn on each borehole log. There are three methods with varying levels of complexity that can be used to draw wells.
How many graphs can be shown on a borehole log?
An unlimited number of graphs can be shown on a borehole log. These graphs can be used to represent concentrations, shear strength, water content, etc.
Can a company logo be included in a template?
Yes, company logos that are stored as bitmaps can be placed anywhere on a template. To add a logo to a template, follow the steps below:
- Edit the template by clicking on the edit template button on the toolbar.

- Hold down the left mouse button and drag the edge to where you want it, then release the button.
Can geophysical logs be shown on the borehole log?
An unlimited number of geophysical logs can be imported into a borehole log. Several popular file formats can be read by the program including ASCII, LAS, Schlumberger LAS, and Mount Sopris. What format are the borehole logs saved in? All of the borehole logs, templates, and legends are stored in Microsoft Access databases.
Can the depth scale of a borehole log be changed?
The depth scale of a borehole log is set in the template, which can be overridden within each borehole log.
Can an aboveground cover or well "stick-up" be shown on a borehole log?
An aboveground cover can be shown by specifying a negative (above ground surface) start depth for the log. To draw a portion of the piezometer or well aboveground set the start depth of the log to a negative number (e.g. -2 feet). Then start the well interval for the cap with a negative top depth (e.g. top depth = -1.5 feet, interval length = 2 feet).
Why is my header data not displaying on the log?
The titles in the template and data types for the log must match exactly (including spaces and capitals). This is normally no problem since the data types for the log are created using the template titles when the log is created. However, if the template titles are edited after the logs are created this can cause problems with the data types not matching. If this happens you can either change the template titles back or modify the data types for the logs. To modify the data types for the logs: Edit the log, Click on the header and select the data type to be modified Click the Edit Data Type button.
Why do some of the headers in my template not appear when entering boring data?
There are two types of header data, text data and memos. Text data is limited to 255 characters and there is no limit to the length of memo data. When the headers are specified in the template, you can specify the header as either text data or a memo. If a width or height is specified for the header it is assumed to be a memo; otherwise, it is assumed to be text data. When entering boring data for a log, the Borehole Data form contains three tabs. The last two tabs are for text data and memo data. If the data type is specified as memo data in the template it will show up in the memo tab. The template title will also be shown in the memo tab; however, this title can be modified or deleted. This property is useful when specifying things such as addresses.
How do I get the page numbers to automatically show up in the footer?
To get the page numbers to show in the footer, you need to put a title such as "Page" or "Sheet" in the template and then make sure that the same title is specified in your Preferences for the Page Title. The Preferences can be edited by selecting the Preferences menu item from the File menu.
How do I transfer my data from WinLoG 4 to 5?
WinLoG 4 projects and templates can be imported one at a time or all at once.
The easiest way to import your templates is to import them directly from the WinLoG 4 database file ("winlog.mdb"). This file contains all of your version 4 templates and is normally in the directory "c:\Program Files\GAEA\database". When importing templates make sure that no project is open, then select File > Import > WinLoG 4 and WinFence 2 Data > Templates > WinLoG Database. You will then be asked to specify the location of the "winlog.mdb" file and which templates to import.
Projects can be imported one at a time or all at once from WinLoG version 4. To import them one at a time, select File > Import > WinLoG 4 and WinFence 2 Data > Project. You will then need to specify the location of the project database.
Alternatively, multiple projects can be imported at the same time by selecting File > Import > WinLoG 4 and WinFence 2 Data > Project List. You will then be asked to specify the location of the main project database file ("gaeaproject.mdb"). This is normally in the directory "c:\Program Files\GAEA\database". After this you will be able to select which projects to import. This option can only be used if your projects are in the actual directories specified in the project list.
