WinLoG Data Types for WinFence

Use the Right Borehole Data to Support Each Correlation

WinFence draws directly from the shared WinLoG project database, allowing selected log records to be displayed beside each borehole on a cross-section.

Choose up to three data types that best explain the interpretation instead of reproducing every field from the original log.

Context for Interpretation, Not a Replacement for the Log

A cross-section has less horizontal space than a borehole log. WinFence therefore lets the user select the most relevant WinLoG data types for each section. Lithology is normally the primary correlation record; additional tracks should answer a specific question.

  • Use a consistent combination where boreholes must be compared directly
  • Keep scale, units and labels readable at the intended output size
  • Select data that materially supports the interpreted boundaries
  • Return to the complete WinLoG record when more detail is required
Display limit: Up to three distinct WinLoG data types can be displayed at each borehole location simultaneously. The available choices depend on the records stored for that borehole and the selected WinFence display configuration.

Six Practical Data-Type Groups

These groups cover the principal WinLoG records used to construct, check and explain a WinFence interpretation.

Lithology and Strata

The fundamental interval information used to compare soil, rock and interpreted stratigraphic units between boreholes.

Examples: lithology symbols, material descriptions, geological units and strata names.

Samples and Core

Depth-linked sampling and core records that show where observations or test specimens were obtained.

Examples: sample ID, sample type, recovery, sample symbols and core intervals.

Geophysical Logs

Continuous or closely spaced downhole measurements used to compare responses and identify possible contacts.

Examples: gamma, resistivity and other configured geophysical curves.

Water Levels

Groundwater measurements used to show observed water conditions in relation to boreholes and interpreted geology.

Examples: historical and current water-level observations and interpreted water-table context.

Well Completion

Scaled construction information for understanding which intervals a monitoring or production well observes.

Examples: casing, screens, seals and related well-completion components.

Geotechnical and Laboratory Results

Selected quantitative results plotted as values, text or graphs where they help compare engineering behaviour.

Examples: SPT N-values, moisture content, shear strength and configured laboratory results.

Select Tracks for the Technical Question

The best three-track combination changes with the purpose of the cross-section.

Geotechnical Profile

Suggested combination: lithology, samples/core and geotechnical results.

Useful for comparing soil or rock units with SPT, recovery, strength or other engineering measurements.

Monitoring-Well Section

Suggested combination: lithology, well completion and water levels.

Useful for reviewing the relationship between screened intervals, seals, groundwater and hydrostratigraphy.

Geophysical Correlation

Suggested combination: lithology, geophysical curve and samples/core.

Useful when continuous downhole responses help extend or question contacts between sampled intervals.

Environmental Section

Suggested combination: lithology, samples and selected results or well construction.

Choose the third track based on whether the section emphasizes contaminant evidence or monitoring design.

Exploration Section

Suggested combination: lithology, core and selected assay, alteration or geophysical information.

Use only the records needed to explain the geological interpretation at the selected scale.

Client Presentation

Suggested combination: lithology plus one or two decisive supporting datasets.

Prioritize clarity and explain abbreviations, units, symbols and the basis of interpretation in the legend or notes.

Prepare WinLoG Data Before Display

Cross-section quality depends on the structure and consistency of the underlying borehole records.

Confirm Location Data

Check coordinates, ground elevations, borehole depths and the project coordinate reference.

Standardize Lithology

Use consistent material and strata naming so similar units can be compared across boreholes.

Check Depth Relationships

Review intervals, sample depths, water levels, curves and well components for alignment and valid ranges.

Choose the Three Tracks

Select the minimum combination that answers the section’s geological or engineering question.

Review Units and Scales

Make graph ranges, measurement units, text and symbols consistent and readable across the section.

Verify the Interpretation

Compare the finished cross-section with the complete logs and document uncertain or unsupported correlations.

Data-quality note: A plotted value is not evidence that it is correct. Validate coordinates, elevations, interval continuity, units, identifiers and the meaning of zero or blank values before using the records to support a cross-section.
