What WinFence is designed to do.

What is WinFence?

WinFence is a GaeaSynergy module for creating detailed, full-colour geological cross-sections from borehole and well data. Completed cross-sections can also be displayed together as 3D fence diagrams.

Which types of projects use WinFence?

WinFence can support geotechnical, environmental, groundwater, mining, geological and other subsurface investigations. The displayed data and interpretation style should be selected for the project’s technical purpose.

Is WinFence a CAD program?

No. WinFence is purpose-built for geological cross-sections and fence diagrams. It uses structured borehole data and strata-editing tools rather than requiring the user to draft every element in a general-purpose CAD environment.

Does WinFence create a verified geological model automatically?

No. Automatic strata generation creates an editable starting interpretation. A qualified user remains responsible for reviewing correlations against borehole spacing, data quality, site geology and project uncertainty.

WinLoG Data and Integration

How borehole records become section context.

How does WinFence use WinLoG data?

WinFence and WinLoG use the same GaeaSynergy project database. This allows selected borehole and well records to be displayed directly at their project locations without rebuilding the data in a separate drawing file.

Which WinLoG data can be displayed?

The principal groups are lithology and strata, samples and core, geophysical logs, water levels, well completion, and selected geotechnical or laboratory results. See the WinLoG Data Types for WinFence page for the detailed reference.

How many data types can appear at one borehole?

WinFence can display up to three distinct WinLoG data types at each borehole location simultaneously. Select the combination that best supports the purpose of the section.

Can WinFence show water levels and well construction?

Yes. Groundwater observations and scaled completion information such as casing, screens and seals can be displayed where these records are stored in the project.

Can it show geophysical and geotechnical data?

Yes. Selected geophysical curves and configured values, text or graphs—such as SPT N-values, moisture content or shear strength—can be shown beside boreholes to assist correlation.

Are deviated boreholes supported?

Yes. WinFence supports the entry and display of deviated boreholes, which is useful for mining, exploration and oil-and-gas investigations where the trace is not vertical.

Creating and Editing Cross-Sections

Automatic generation and interpretive control.

How is a cross-section alignment selected?

A cross-section can be created from a path on the project map or defined manually. Map-based creation helps the user select boreholes and view the alignment in spatial context.

Can WinFence generate strata automatically?

Yes. WinFence can determine an initial way to connect strata by comparing lithology, thickness and occurrence between boreholes, wells and intersecting cross-sections. The result can then be edited.

Can I create the strata manually?

Yes. Users can build sections manually and can add, delete, reshape and edit strata in automatically generated sections.

What is boundary snapping?

Boundary snapping fixes the boundary of one stratum to another boundary. This helps users create connected contacts quickly and keep shared edges aligned while the interpretation is edited.

Which strata types are supported?

WinFence supports standard layers as well as faults, lenses, intrusions and alteration zones. These forms can represent localized bodies, discontinuities, pinch-outs and changing subsurface geometry.

Can intersecting cross-sections be used during correlation?

Yes. WinFence can consider relationships at intersecting cross-sections when generating strata, helping the user maintain consistency across connected interpretations.

What data should be checked before creating a section?

3D Display and Output

Can WinFence create 3D fence diagrams?

Yes. Completed 2D cross-sections can be combined in a 3D view so their orientation and intersections can be examined in the project’s spatial context.

Which controls are available in the 3D view?

The 3D environment supports pan, zoom and rotation. Users can establish camera perspectives and adjust light sources to improve depth and shading.

Can cross-sections be displayed with maps and other project information?

Yes. GaeaSynergy project views can combine selected cross-sections with mapped project information, annotations, legends and other available presentation content.

How do I print or export a cross-section to PDF?

Display the cross-section in a GaeaSynergy project view, then print the view or use the PDF output command. This allows the section to be presented with its selected layout, map, legend and annotations.

Does vertical exaggeration change the underlying data?

No. Vertical exaggeration changes the presentation scale. It can improve legibility, but the applied exaggeration should be clear because it changes the apparent geometry of the section.

Which WinFence license options are available?

What is the difference between single-user and network licensing?

A single-user license is intended for one workstation. A network license provides concurrent access managed for a team, with the number of simultaneous users determined by the licensed seats.
